No tile is entirely slip-resistant. The likelihood of slipping and falling can be influenced by various factors, such as the building's design, any contaminants present on the tile, the person’s gait (whether running, walking, or limping), and whether they are children or elderly. ### What the P-rating means Most of our tiles list a slip rating on the product page as **P-Rating**. P-ratings come from the wet pendulum test in Australian Standard AS 4586 and run from P0 (lowest slip resistance when wet) to P5 (highest). If a product page shows N/A, no rating has been supplied for that tile. ### General guide by area The Standards Australia handbook SA HB 198:2014 gives these general recommendations: - Balconies, verandas, courtyards, carports, driveways, external walkways and roof decks (no steeper than 1 in 14): **P4** - External ramps, sloping driveways and footpaths steeper than 1 in 14: **P5** - Swimming pool surrounds: **P4**; pool ramps and stairs leading into the water: **P5** - Wet entry areas of public buildings: **P3** These are guidelines, not a guarantee of safety. The handbook notes that the right choice also depends on wear, maintenance, contamination, water or other liquids on the floor, slope, lighting, handrails and the people using the area. It does not set a specific rating for floors inside private homes. ### Check with your builder or installer Before you buy, confirm that the tile's P-rating suits your specific area with your builder or tiler. They know the site conditions and the building requirements that apply to your project. The responsibility for the proper application and usage of ceramic tiles lies beyond the supplier's control, making it crucial for end-users to manage the risk of slips and falls.
