Measure each surface in metres, calculate its area in square metres (m²), then add a waste allowance confirmed by your tiler. Finally, round up to the product's available selling unit. Measure different tile products separately. ### 1. Measure the area to be tiled Use a tape measure, paper and a calculator. Sketch the surfaces and label every dimension. Convert millimetres to metres first: 3000 mm = 3 m. Do not mix units. **Rectangular floors:** length × width. A floor measuring 4 m × 3 m has an area of **12 m²**. **L-shaped floors:** split the floor into rectangles that do not overlap, calculate each one, then add them. For example, section A is 3 m × 4 m = 12 m² and section B is 2 m × 2 m = 4 m². These areas exclude waste.* ### 2. Measure walls, splashbacks and extra surfaces For each wall, multiply its width by the height you intend to tile, not automatically the ceiling height. For example, 3 m wide × 2.7 m high = **8.1 m²**. Add together only the surfaces using the same tile. Mark doors, windows, cabinets and fixtures on your sketch. Ask your tiler which untiled areas can be deducted and whether tiling will continue behind or underneath fixtures. Do not automatically subtract every opening: cuts around edges can still require additional tiles. Include the tiled faces inside niches, window reveals, steps and other returns. Keep skirting, trims and feature tiles on separate lists where they use a different product or selling unit. Curved, sloping or complex surfaces need a tiler's measurement and layout check. ### 3. Add waste once Cutting, layout and breakage can increase the quantity required. Tilemall's calculator includes an optional **10% waste allowance**, but 10% is not a guarantee that you will have enough. Large-format tiles, diagonal or herringbone layouts, and rooms with many cuts may need a different allowance. Ask your tiler to confirm the allowance for your chosen tile and layout, including any spare tiles you want to keep. **If your entered quantity already includes waste, do not add the calculator's 10% again.** Example only: if your tiler confirms 10% for a 12 m² floor, calculate 12 × 1.10 = **13.2 m²** before rounding to the selling unit. ### 4. Check the selling unit and round up Check the exact product, size and finish you want to order. Products may be sold by the box, sheet or piece, and coverage varies between products. Do not assume that different products have the same coverage. For products sold by the box, Tilemall sells whole boxes. The displayed price per square metre (m²) is a reference price calculated by dividing the box price by the coverage per box. It helps you compare products; it does not mean you can buy part of a box. The area you need, including your confirmed waste allowance, is divided by the coverage per box and rounded up to a whole number of boxes. The supplied area may therefore be greater than the area you need. Your order is priced using the whole-box quantity and the applicable box price. Use the tile calculator on the exact product page to confirm the purchase quantity, or ask our sales team for a quote. Rounded figures displayed on a page may not be suitable for calculating your order yourself. If the product has no calculator or its box coverage is unclear, send us the product link or SKU and selected size and finish so we can confirm the details. Do not estimate box coverage from tile dimensions alone. For mosaics and sheets, use the stated coverage and selling unit. For trims, borders or slabs, ask your tiler to confirm the required pieces and cutting plan instead of relying on area alone. ### 5. Confirm before ordering - Check dimensions, units and surfaces against your sketch. - Keep quantities separate for each tile, colour and size. - Confirm waste has been included once and the order is rounded to the correct selling unit. - Have your tiler confirm the final quantity and layout before you place the order.
